Vidal Santiago Díaz was the personal barber and confidant of Pedro Albizu Campos. Owner of a barbershop called "Salón Boricua", located in Barrio Obrero, San Juan. In 1950, a few hours after the Jayuya Uprising began, Vidal sent a telegraph to the Attorney General, requesting to act as an intermediary between Albizu Campos and the National Guard, who had already surrounded his house to arrest him at his residence in Old San Juan. Immediately they sent armed officers to seize Salón Boricua. When Vidal looked out his window, he knew that the armed officers were not going to look for him to serve as an intermediary, they were going to arrest him and possibly torture him. A confrontation began that lasted more than 4 hours between the Insular Police and the National Guard. The WIAC radio station and others broadcasted live, in a sensationalist way, the event for all of Puerto Rico. The most interesting thing is that around 40 officers armed with machine guns, bombs, grenades and tear gas, thought that there was more than one person inside the Salón Boricua helping Vidal. He was alone at all times, moving quickly between the windows of the premises and using a secret arsenal of weapons he had collected for years. The bullets reached Vidal several times, in his legs, in his hands, collapsing at the end of a concrete staircase on his body. An army officer, before raising his body in the rubble, fired a shot at Vidal's head, killing him instantly. When he removed his body from Salón Boricua, it showed no sign of life. Minutes later, the corpse of Vidal Santiago opened his eyes ... "VIDAL IS ALIVE!". Nobody could believe it. The reporters announced the news rapidly for the entire nation and that was how Vidal Santiago Díaz became the second most famous nationalist in the history of Puerto Rico, after Pedro Albizu Campos. They knew him since then as "the barber who defied an empire with a bullet in his brain".
