Arturo Alfonso Schomburg es históricamente una de las figuras más importantes para el pueblo africano, considerado universalmente como el Padre de la Historia Negra en el Mundo. Desde pequeño tenía curiosidad por conocer la historia de sus raíces africanas, pero en aquel entones no existían libros sobre estudios africanos, algo que creó en Schomburg una inquietud y al mismo tiempo sembró una semilla de curiosidad. Dedicó su vida a coleccionar documentos importantes sobre la historia y cultura negra. Su colección de más de 10,000 objetos, entre ellos una copia original de la proclama de independencia de Haití, más de 5,000 libros, 3,000 manuscritos, 2,000 grabados, música, entre otros materiales de valor incalculable. Son muchos los afroamericanos que admiran y agradecen su contribución. Hoy día, el Centro Schomburg para la Investigación en Cultura Negra -parte de la Biblioteca Pública de Nueva York- celebra en Harlem la memoria de este puertorriqueño que dedicó su vida a demostrar que África y el Caribe también tienen su historia y tenemos un importante pasado por descubrir.

Arthur Alfonso Schomburg is historically one of the most important figures for the African people, universally considered as the Father of Black History in the World. Since he was a kid, he wanted to know the history of his African roots, however, there were no books on African studies at the time, something that dissapointed him at school and at the same time that sowed a seed of curiosity in his mind. He dedicated his life to collecting important documents about black history and culture. His collection of more than 10,000 objects, among them an original copy of the proclamation of independence of Haiti, more than 5,000 books, 3,000 manuscripts, 2,000 engravings, music, among other invaluable materials. There are many African-Americans who admire and appreciate his contribution. Today, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture - part of the New York Public Library - celebrates in Harlem the memory of this Puerto Rican who dedicated his life to prove that Africa and the Caribbean also have their history and we have an important past to discover.
